“Sticks”, artist and illustrator, was naturally very physically strong. Like most strength trainees he gravitated to competitive sports, hoping to rise to the top. Boxing grabbed his attention. But after one amateur meet in high school, he returned home with bruises and cuts, which my mother reacted to in tears. This was enough for Sticks. He swapped his gloves for pencils and paper and set up a home gym in the basement where he lifted and drew for the rest of his life. The huge gallery of work in strongman images resulted.
