Body Building

“Sticks”, artist and illustrator, was naturally very physically strong. Like most strength trainees he gravitated to competitive sports, hoping to rise to the top. Boxing grabbed his attention. But after one amateur meet in high school, he returned home with bruises and cuts, which my mother reacted to in tears. This was enough for Sticks. He swapped his gloves for pencils and paper and set up a home gym in the basement where he lifted and drew for the rest of his life. The huge gallery of work in strongman images resulted.

Sticks', (artist and illustrator), artwork also lends a walk back in time when restaurants, bakeries and bars sponsored bustling activities, raising money that went back into our community. Special events were looked forward to for the sheer thrill of sportsmanship in the spirit of friendly competition. He created artwork for Central New York eateries and businesses shown below.

Scenes

Sticks Scenes are drawings that have no dialogue in them. They contain two or more groups of people, engaged in an activity or set against a specific theme. Early scene work was created on large drawing pads, popular before the internet, cell phones and current social media. His Scenes were social media of the time, a representation of good times and activities enjoyed by all types of people. Common reactions were smiles and laughter, and a sense of connection and belonging.
